How Exactly Does Microneedling Work?

Hyperpigmentation may be caused by sun exposure, hormones, medications or aging. Melasma is a skin condition that produces brown or grayish-brown spots on the face. Both of these skin conditions can leave people feeling self-conscious about their appearance. Although some common treatments to remove face spots are painful or expensive, there is another option that is less expensive and gentler. It is called microneedling.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is also called collagen induction therapy. This is because it helps stimulate the production of collagen, which is found below the skin. It is the substance that gives skin a smoother, fuller and brighter appearance. Elastin is also produced below the skin and gives it more elasticity. Microneedling involves tiny needles that do not leave visible puncture marks, and the procedure helps the body produce new layers of tissue. New tissue layers come with new capillaries. When blood flows into the tiny capillaries, it may clear up skin imperfections such as spots from melasma or hyperpigmentation.

Microneedling For Skin Imperfections

Although people often get microneedling for melasma or microneedling for hyperpigmentation, they also get the benefits of smoother and tighter skin. Microneedling produces an overall youthful appearance. It is also beneficial for other skin imperfections such as rosacea and scars from injuries or acne. Some people use microneedling to treat alopecia. Additionally, it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles. Microneedling minimizes pore size and leaves the skin’s texture and tone looking better, which gives anyone with skin imperfections a boost of confidence.

As it is with many other types of treatments, microneedling may not completely remove hyperpigmentation or melasma spots after the initial treatment. Since each person’s skin is different, the best way to determine a proper treatment course is to schedule a consultation with a professional. Microneedling does not have a lengthy downtime, and most patients return to their normal activities the same day. There are no harmful chemicals involved, and the process stimulates natural body functions. The tiny needle punctures promote natural healing responses in addition to collagen regeneration. While some cosmetic treatments are not effective on all types of skin, microneedling can be used on nearly any type of skin.
